AustralianSuper

AustralianSuper is helping improve financial literacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As Australia’s largest super fund with members from a diverse range of industries and cultures, we acknowledge our role in supporting an inclusive and diverse nation, where the cultural backgrounds of all peoples are recognised and respected.

Our vision for reconciliation is a national superannuation system that meets the financial, emotional and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through, to and in retirement.

AustralianSuper launched its second Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in July 2021. The Innovate RAP is helping to close the super gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous Australians. It also supports building better relationships – with both fund members and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander business community and service providers.

In recognition of the different barriers to accessing super for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we’ve implemented the following support resources:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples specialist service

The service is run by a dedicated and culturally-trained team of AustralianSuper colleagues, who better understand the challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Assistance covers identification issues, language barriers and payments related to unrecognised kinship structures. To access the service call 1300 300 273.

Interpreter service

An interpreter service to help members is available in 50 languages. Members can book this service through the Contact Centre. AustralianSuper also works to better support and serve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members and advance reconciliation through:

The Schools Plus Financial Literacy program

AustralianSuper partnered with Schools Plus Australia on a financial literacy program to selected schools in remote NT. The program, launched as part of our first RAP, helps improve basic understanding of financial terminology and technology, and how to use this knowledge in daily life.

AustralianSuper intern program

Working with CareerTrackers, an organisation that supports First Nations university students, we currently sponsor an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university student with a 10-week paid internship. The internship program is now in its fourth year.

Helping achieve better outcomes

AustralianSuper supports government policies that improve super outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, looking at:

  • Greater acknowledgement of the cultural associations of kinship and how this may affect current policy and procedures
  • Lowering the preservation age (the age you can start to access your super)
  • Increasing the Super Guarantee (the minimum amount of super paid by your employer) to 12% by 2025
  • Keeping low income aid to support super savings.

Take the first steps to sorting your super, with a fund that’s helping all Australians live well in retirement. Learn more about our Reconciliation Action Plan.
