Five money lies we tell ourselves
Take a look at five common money mistruths we often tell ourselves – with ideas to get back on track with guilt-free money management. 1. I deserve a treat. You only live once, right? It’s fine to treat yourself occasionally to an impulse buy, but be sure to budget for the cost. 2. I’ll pay off my credit card in full…next month Knuckle down and pay as much as you can off the card each month. Skip the urge to reload the card with fresh purchases until you have a zero balance. 3. I can’t follow a budget – it’s too hard! Try the ‘pay yourself first’ technique. Decide how much you can save and set up an online transfer to shift this amount out of your everyday account into a separate savings account. 4. Things would be better if I earned a bit more A useful first step in taking control of your money is to know where it goes. Enlist an app to see how much you spend each day. 5. I’ll never be rich While most of us will never be billionaires, spending less than you earn, growing savings, and minimising debt are the cornerstones of financial security. Home Insurance up for renewal? Here’s a rundown of the top 3 things to check for on your home insurance policy every year to avoid nasty surprises in the event of a claim. 1. The sum of contents insured – is it really enough? In most cases, you may have accounted for the big ticket items like your furniture, appliances, electronics and valuables. Many of us really underestimate what it would cost to replace all of our stuff – from clothing, to kids toys, bedding, tools, sporting equipment and basics like cutlery and crockery. TIP – Walk through your home and do a room by room calculation of replacement costs for everything. And, don’t forget to account for what’s tucked away in cupboards and drawers. 2. The cost to rebuild Would you believe that 80% of homeowners are underinsured according to the Insurance Council of Australia?* The reasons may be because we’ve simply guessed the amount or based the value on the council rates notice. We may have forgotten to change our insurance after we’ve renovated or landscaped. Support Family Violence Leave for all workersRight now in Australia, employers are shirking their duty of care to employees experiencing family violence. Despite community pressure, many employers are still denying people experiencing family violence the time they need to attend doctors’ appointments and court dates. That’s why union members are asking the Fair Work Commission and Governments to give people subjected to family violence a minimum of ten paid days away from work. It is the responsibility of our whole community to end family violence, and to support people experiencing violence right now. Employers say that this is a ‘private issue’ rather than something we must tackle as a society. They even argue that we should have to trade off other work rights to get it! They are refusing to step up and help to end this crisis. Tell employers everyone has the right to feel safe at work, and everyone should have the right to paid days away from work if they are subjected to family violence. |
