Greetings and welcome to the first Australian Unions Member Benefits update for 2020.  It has been a grim start to the year for many people in bushfire ravaged regions across the country and with this in mind the ACTU has established a relief fund to provide support for union members affected.  Also, in our first edition for the year we have news on the ACTU submission to the Retirement Income Review, our AFLW Footy Tipping competition is back and there are two lots of prizes to the movies to be won!

Bushfire Relief Fund

The ACTU Bushfire Relief Fund has been established to especially provide support to union members who may need support beyond that available generally.

To donate to this fund, please fill out the online form here.

If you have skills and experience that can help those in need, please let us know.  We’ll then consult those coordinating relief efforts and get in touch with you where appropriate.

Five signs your finances need an overhaul in 2020

Money problems can creep up us on gradually – here are five key indicators that you could be heading into financial stress in 2020 and tips on what you can do to avoid it, brought to you by industry super fund-owned bank ME.

1. Your bank account is frequently overdrawn

Due to our busy lives, even the best money managers can overdraw their accounts from time to time. But if your account regularly dips into a negative balance, it’s time for action.

Review your budget to ensure you’re not overspending. Check if you’re being overly ambitious with regular transfers to savings accounts – trying to save too much, too fast could leave you overdrawn.  Also, consider the range of smartphone apps that send you an alert when a regular bill is due. A simple reminder can help you avoid overdrawn account fees.

Superannuation must increase to 15% and women need a better deal

In its submission to the Retirement Income Review ‘Living Well After Work’, the Australian Union movement calls for superannuation to increase to 15% for all workers and for equal retirement outcomes for women.

Women, on average, retire with superannuation balances 47% lower than men. Women’s poor retirement balance are the result of compounding issues throughout working life and structures of the system.

ACTU Assistant Secretary, Scott Connolly said, “The Superannuation Guarantee must be increased to 15% as soon as possible to ensure a dignified retirement for all workers.

“Women face retirement today with far less super than men. The inequalities which have been baked into the system must be removed.”
