Great Australian Dream slipping away for the young?

Gen Y and Gen Z are suffering heavily from the COVID-19 pandemic, with new research suggesting their key life milestones have been set back years – or possibly forever.

A home. A family. Steady employment, and a comfortable retirement. Those have been the dreams of many Australians living in the supposed ‘Land of the Fair Go’. But according to worrying new research, those dreams may be fading.

ME, the bank owned by industry super funds, surveyed 1,000 Gen Z and Gen Ys in September 2020 about their aspirations. What they found is disturbing. A whopping 82% of these young people believed it was easier for past generations to achieve their dreams.

Virtual Organising Conference 2020

Get in quick as registrations for our upcoming Virtual Organising Conference close on Tuesday 10th November!

The conference will take place 16-20 November.

This conference represents the coming together of the Indigenous Conference, Youth Conference and Organising Conference — all of which were set to occur separately in 2020. We’re proud to be collaborating with the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions to deliver this event.

The 2020 Virtual Organising Conference will be held virtually, meaning that you can attend from wherever you are. Union officials, members, retired unionists and HSRs are all welcome to attend. Tickets are $149 for officials and $99 for members and retired unionists.

Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA Virtual Gathering

The time has come again to support global solidarity by joining Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA at this year’s annual celebration.

In place of a physical gathering, this year we are asking you to join virtually as we come together across Australia, and globally, to celebrate the achievements from the past 12 months.

Joining APHEDA this year will be General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Sharan Burrow.

JobMaker scheme will churn workers through short-term, insecure jobs

ACTU President Michele O’Neil will give evidence to the Senate Inquiry examining the JobMaker Hiring Credit to express the union movement’s serious concerns about the design of the scheme and the likely outcome for workers and the economy.

These concerns include:

  • The potential for the replacement of existing workers with subsidised workers,
  • The prioritisation of short term, insecure jobs,
  • Leaving millions of workers aged over 35 without access to meaningful government support to find work now, and crucially once JobKeeper ends in March of 2021
  • The low rate of the subsidies available ($100-$200 a week) which are unlikely to provide enough incentive for employers to take upon the program
