Tips from ME on how to save money on food and reduce waste

This is crazy. One in two Australian households say they have no cash to spare at the end of each month – yet we collectively toss out up to $10 billion in food each year . That makes it time to embrace ways to save money on food and cut back waste.

The rising cost of essentials is the number one concern for two out of five Australian households. But food rescue group OzHarvest say we throw out $1,036 worth of groceries each year . It makes saving money on food a smart way to keep more cash in our hip pocket.drop in financial confidence reflects a trifecta of factors.

Take the “Change the Rules” survey

This is your chance to tell us what rules at work need to change to make our workplaces fair.

This short survey will take you about five minutes, it’s confidential and it will help us build a powerful people-powered movement to change the rules for workers across this country.

Tell us about your priorities. Our demands will be built by working people, by thousands of unions members like you having your say. Change only comes from the bottom up, our movement will need to involve all of us to swing the pendulum back.

Once you have done the survey, forward to five of your mates and ask them to do it too. If they are not members yet, we will ask them to join us.

The survey is open now and will close on 1 December 2017.

Govt attacks on Industry Super ramp up

The Government has stepped up their attacks on industry super funds who are run only to profit members and supported by both Unions and employer groups. On September 14th 2017 the Federal Government introduced a range of bills relating to superannuation including changes to super fund governance, which would change the nature of the industry funds’ representative model. The equal representative model of employer and member representatives on boards has been a proven success, delivering strong returns to members. These proposed legislative changes seek to dismantle this successful model. Industry SuperFunds oppose this change.

Other changes include legislation to close a legal loophole that allows employers to shortchange employees who make extra salary sacrifice super contributions. Closing this loophole is a welcome step that shows progress is being made to tackle widespread Super Guarantee non-compliance, but a more comprehensive approach is necessary given the salary sacrifice changes will only help 16 % of those affected by unpaid superannuation.

Meet our NRL footy tipping winner!

Our NRL footy tipping competition winner, Carol Timmins, a Medical Scientist’s Association of Victoria (MSAV) member from Melbourne, who tipped a solid 134 with a margin of 353 points, has received $1,000 into her new Everyday Transaction Account from ME last month.

When quizzed about her NRL tipping prowess, Carol told us that she had no real system, apart from always tipping Melbourne Storm to win!

The winner of the AFL tipping comp was George Phelps, a retired CEPU member from Sydney, who was sailing off on a cruise in September and was unable to be take part in this photo opportunity.  George won with a fantastic score of 138 with a margin of 617 at the end of the AFL home and away season.

A big thank you to all the union member tipsters and also to ME for providing the prize money.

Also, how great is it that a Victorian won the NRL tipping and a New South Welshman won the AFL tipping?!

Don’t forget we’re back in 2018!

ACTU Secretary’s address to Senate Committee

Last week, ACTU Secretary Sally McManus, addressed the Senate Committee on the Turnbull Government’s proposed “Ensuring Integrity” Legislation in Melbourne at Parliament House of Victoria.

“This is an extreme and dangerous bill.” Sally said.

“It is opposed in the strongest possible terms by all affiliates of the ACTU.

This bill is all about double standards. It ensures there is one set of laws for those big corporations, many who are donors to the LNP, who will face little scrutiny and minimal enforcement, and another set of more onerous and harsh laws for working people and their unions.”
