Can you speak Superannuation?

Superannuation, retirement and eligibility to the pension are regularly in the news headlines at the moment, yet studies have shown that much of the ‘jargon’ used when talking about these topics confuses most of us.

Nearly 8 out of 10 Australians admitted that they don’t really understand much of the terminology used.*

As superannuation is probably the largest asset many of us will accumulate during our working life (after the family home) and will play a major role in the standard of living people achieve in retirement, it is important that we know more about what the key terms mean.

In reality, most of the terms are quite straightforward.

To find out what 20 of the most commonly used superannuation terms mean, visit the Australian Unions Financial Advice Toolkit.

Turn your tax refund into smart money

We look at simple ways to put this year’s tax cheque to good use.

How good is tax time? In exchange for a few hours filling out your tax return, you could receive a handy refund cheque. And with a bit of planning you could make the tax man’s refund go a lot further.

Grow your retirement savings

Using your tax refund to make a contribution to your super fund will boost the value of your nest egg. If your other half is a low income earner, consider using your tax refund to make a contribution to their super fund. You may be eligible for a tax offset worth up to $540.

What you need to know about the Productivity Commission Report

The Productivity Commission has released a report that would radically change the way workers rights are set and enforced in Australia. Its findings will dominate the industrial debate between now and the federal election.

Here’s what you need to know.

The Penalty Rate double standard

The Productivity Commission recommends there should be two classes of Australian workers. Those who wear uniforms and save lives and have the capacity to embarrass politicians when they campaign for their rights; and one for everyone else.

Bye-Bye Sundays

Associated to this is a proposal to cut Sunday rates to the Saturday rate for workers in hospitality, entertainment, retail, restaurants and cafes, leading to a massive pay cut to a significant section of the workforce.

'Blood on the Coal'

'Blood on the Coal' is a remarkable, award winning film which traces the history of Australia’s Queensland coal miners and their Union from the darkest days of the 19th century to the daunting industrial, safety and community challenges driven by giant global corporations today.

Narrated by Jack Thompson, it is a story of struggle and survival, of courage and determination, of tragedy and triumph and of never giving up, even in the face of the most daunting challenges.

The stories in the film are told with compelling honesty, humour and wit by miners and their communities who survive in one of the world’s most hazardous industries – coal mining.

There are a limited number of special screenings that need your support.

We have two double passes for each of the following screenings:

  • Crown Village Cinemas - Melbourne on 26/8 at 6:30pm
  • Palace Nova Eastend - Adelaide on 26/8 at 6:30pm

Join the Fight for our Living Standards

Tony Abbott’s inquiry into workplace relations has just called for cutting penalty rates and the minimum wage, making it easier to sack people and giving employers even more power over our lives.

This is exactly what Abbott would do if he got re-elected. But with your help that’s not going to happen.

We are going to door knock every seat Abbott needs to win to hold on to power on the 12th and 13th of September.  Sign up to take part and help us build a better future.

Abbott's productivity commission is going to hold hearings around the country click here to find out where and show your opposition.
