Banks aren't Super

Last week Industry Super Australia released a new chapter in the Industry SuperFunds’ 'In Good Hands' campaign, informing 5 million members and 600,000 employers of the importance of protecting workers’ super savings in their Industry SuperFund.

Over the last year the campaign has helped sensitise members to the behaviour of the banks at the retail level. But, with the vast majority of Australian workers still going with the default fund their employer has in place, there’s a compelling case for taking the campaign back into the workplace.

We know that the big banks are offering incentives to their business customers to bundle default super with other business banking services, which could mean that members’ savings end up in a poor performing fund.

Exit the credit roundabout

One in two Australians are struggling with credit card debt.

An Australian Senate inquiry is soon meeting to address some of thorny questions many Australians are asking about credit cards – like why some cards are still charging interest topping 20 per cent at a time when the Reserve Bank’s official cash rate is just 2.0 per cent.

The inquiry couldn’t have come at a better time. Research by ME shows one in two credit card holders  are stuck in a ‘credit card roundabout’, unable to pay off the outstanding balance each month.

Do you speak Superannuation?

Superannuation, retirement and eligibility to the pension are regularly in the news headlines at the moment, yet studies have shown that much of the ‘jargon’ used when talking about these topics confuses most of us.

Nearly 8 out of 10 Australians admitted that they don’t really understand much of the terminology used.*

As superannuation is probably the largest asset many of us will accumulate during our working life (after the family home) and will play a major role in the standard of living people achieve in retirement, it is important that we know more about what the key terms mean.

In reality, most of the terms are quite straightforward.

To find out what 20 of the most commonly used superannuation terms mean, visit the Australian Unions Financial Advice Toolkit.

*Superannuation jargon is a barrier for Australians, a survey found (Alison McMeekin 30 March 2012)

Win a double pass to see 'People, Places, Things' from Madman!

Enter the draw to win one of 8 double passes to see 'People, Places, Things' that we are giving away this month courtesy of Madman Entertainment.

Will (Jemaine Clement) is a graphic novelist, a professor at the School of Visual Arts and the father of beautiful twin girls. His seemingly picture-perfect Brooklyn life is turned upside down when he walks in on the mother of his children and long-time girlfriend, Charlie, with another man at their daughters’ over the top fifth birthday party.

Flash forward one year later, Will is a single father, living alone, trying to put his life back together with the help of his student Kat (Jessica Williams) and her mother (Regina Hall). In this thoughtful comedy, Will is forced to navigate the unknown landscape of single fatherhood and dating in New York City, while coming to terms with himself both as a father as an artist.

To win a double pass to see ‘People, Places, Things’ email memberbenefits@actu.org.au with your name, address, union name and membership number before close of business Friday 25th September 2015.
