I am writing to ask you to commit to supporting the Australian union movement’s claim for a genuine increase of 5% to wages as part of the Annual Wage Review.
In 2021, workers suffered the biggest pay cut in real terms that we have seen in over 20 years. But it’s not just last year that wages have gone backwards. Every year, for the last eight years, your government has predicted wage growth. Every year, you’ve been wrong.
Australia has a cost-of-living crisis, with essentials such has housing, groceries, fuel, childcare and clothing increasing rapidly. Workers are struggling to keep up after a decade of record low wage growth under your Government.
It’s a choice you make, Mr Morrison. And I’m asking you to choose to support workers.
Improving the wages doesn’t just benefit the 1 in 4 workers in Australia who rely on the minimum wage or Award wages. It improves the standard of living for all of us and will help shield workers from the rising cost of living.
