Seven steps to put your money under the microscope

Now’s the time to workshop money matters to plug any leaks. Here are seven steps to boost your bank balance.

We’re all navigating the new situation of self-isolation and social distancing. So why not put time at home to good use giving yourself a money makeover?  We look at seven ways to save a bundle and shore up your finances.

  1. Know where every buck goes

ACTU will focus on building a better, stronger and fairer Australia

The peak body for working people, the Australian Council of Trade Unions, welcomes the opportunity to sit down with the Government and employers to discuss how our economy can be rebuilt as flagged by Prime Minister, Scott Morrison at his recent national press club speech.

The ACTU also welcomed the withdrawal of the Ensuring Integrity legislation – a law which unions and many legal experts say was a direct attack on the democratic rights of workers.

The ACTU called on the government to ensure that the recovery strengthens the rights of all working people, and reiterated that attacks on working people, whether from business lobbyists or governments, were not compatible with a cooperative approach to rebuilding Australia.

ACTU Secretary, Sally McManus said, “Australian Unions will not lose our focus on the immediate challenge to stop a second wave of infections. This is our first job, otherwise the pain and sacrifices working people have made, with 20 per cent of working people now unemployed or underemployed and so many losing income, will be for nothing.”

Mabo Day – Wednesday 3 June

Today is the last day of Reconciliation Week. It’s also Mabo Day, where we celebrate the life of Eddie Mabo.

On June 3, 1992 Eddie Koiki Mabo and the clans of Mer in the Torres Strait was concluded in the High Court of Australia.

The injustice of the legal fiction of terra nullius was overturned. The decision by the High Court recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had custodial ownership of the land and a unique relationship to country that dated back thousands of years.

Eddie was also a proud union delegate for the RTBU Australia. In Queensland he helped organise his fellow workers in the railways.

Sadly Eddie passed away before the landmark decision was handed down – but his legacy lives on.

And the union movement was there in solidarity along the way.
