Have a chat with almost any young worker and you’ll quickly find out that work/life isn’t what it used to be.

Now, we have the data to prove it.

The ACTU’s Work Shouldn’t Hurt report found that, of the respondents aged under 24:

  • 3 in 10 workers have experienced sexual harassment
  • Over a third (37%) reported at least one injury in the last 12 months, including 30% who experienced a work-related mental health issue
  • Insecure workers were far less likely to report a workplace health and safety issue for fear of getting in trouble with their employer
  • Young workers reported that workplaces were not providing adequate on the job training and enough staff and hours for jobs to be performed safely

If the government truly has a commitment to addressing the mental health of young people and sexual harassment in workplaces, they have a funny way of showing it. Young people deserve better. Australians deserve better. You deserve better.

That’s why we’re calling on the government to address the issue of insecure work for young people. You shouldn’t have to face an entire working life of uncertainty and no job security. It is very clear that insecure work further entrenches obstacles young people face in the workplace, and the Commonwealth Government needs to act.
