I am writing to ask you to urgently commit to delivering secure jobs and a safe climate for working people.
Although the world has already experienced 1.2°C of warming since the pre-industrial era, and warming is increasing by 0.2°C per decade, the Morrison Government continues to undermine global progress on climate change.
We have no credible mid-term emissions targets, or climate change or energy policy.
This Government’s inaction means we are falling behind the rest of the world. There is a growing risk to Australian workers’ jobs and industries as global markets demand low emissions goods and services. And as the climate changes, our safety at work and our communities are under threat.
For too long workers have been left out of Australia’s climate policy debate. Climate change effects every job and sector and the voices of workers needs to be heard.
That’s why working people are calling on the Federal Government to commit to the following to deliver secure jobs for a safe climate.
1. A clean energy economy powered by secure jobs
Australian has the natural resources and the people to become a clean energy superpower. Clean exports alone can power nearly 400,000 new jobs by 2040 across the country.
We need a plan to seize the enormous economic opportunity in clean exports, and create secure, well-paid union jobs across mining and manufacturing as well as in services such as education & training.
2. Jobs and a Just Transition to support workers and communities
Communities that are facing an energy transition can flourish. 46 Countries already have Just Transition plans, but the Morrison Government doesn’t.
The Federal Government must commit to a national Jobs and Just Transition Plan.
3. Commit to proper climate targets
Australia should legislate a net zero emissions target by 2050 at the latest and match the 2030 targets of many of our allies and trading partners by halving our emissions by 2030.
Under the Morrison Government, Australia has done neither: Our net zero emissions “plan” and our target to reduce emissions by 26-28% by 2030 is not a fair contribution to helping the world meet the Paris Agreement temperature targets.
With your leadership and commitment, we can turn around our embarrassing inaction on climate change and deliver secure jobs and a safe climate for working people. But we must act now.
