Will your retirement plans pass the new Assets Test?

5 things you need to know about the upcoming changes

From 1 January 2017, new stricter thresholds will be used to assess eligibility for the age pension, an important part of many Australians retirement plans.

If you are nearing retirement age and planning to retire in the next couple of years you will be subject to the new thresholds.

You need to be aware of the changes as they may impact your eligibility and the amount of pension benefit you will be entitled to.

To find out more about the changes, visit the Australian Unions Financial Advice Toolkit.

International Women's Day on 8 March - Pledge for Parity

All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.

Pledge for Parity is the 2016 theme for the global hub.  Everyone - men and women - can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly - whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias. Each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity.

Each year International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on the 8th of March. The first International Women's Day was held in 1911. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day.

Some unions, trades & labour councils and workplaces will be holding IWD events this week in the lead up to 8 March - be sure to check with your union or local state labour council for details of any events in your area.

Win one of 6 DVDs from Madman!

Enter the draw to win one of 3 copies of both 'Sucker' and 'Learning to Drive' that we are giving away to 6 lucky union members this month!

When 18-year-old Lawrence is caught cheating on his final year math exam, he fails to get into medical school and is banished to stay at his goofy Uncle’s house for the summer. By chance he meets ‘The Professor’, a colourful aging conman who invites Lawrence to join him and his sharp-tonged daughter Sarah on a road trip. As they make their way across the country (leaving suckers in their wake), Lawrence learns the ancient art of the swindle from the Professor, and from Sarah he learns the truth about love.

To win a copy of ‘Sucker’ email with your name, address, union name and membership number before close of business Friday 25th March 2016.

Learning to Drive

Wendy is a fiery Manhattan author whose husband has just left her for another woman; Darwan is a soft-spoken taxi driver from India on the verge of an arranged marriage. As Wendy sets out to reclaim her independence, she runs into a barrier common to many lifelong New Yorkers: she’s never learned to drive. When Wendy hires Darwan to teach her, her unraveling life and his calm restraint seem like an awkward fit. But as he shows her how to take control of the wheel, and she coaches him on how to impress a woman, their unlikely friendship awakens them to the joy, humour, and love in starting life anew.
