Banks aren't Super

Last week Industry Super Australia released a new chapter in the Industry SuperFunds’ 'In Good Hands' campaign, informing 5 million members and 600,000 employers of the importance of protecting workers’ super savings in their Industry SuperFund.

Over the last year the campaign has helped sensitise members to the behaviour of the banks at the retail level. But, with the vast majority of Australian workers still going with the default fund their employer has in place, there’s a compelling case for taking the campaign back into the workplace.

We know that the big banks are offering incentives to their business customers to bundle default super with other business banking services, which could mean that members’ savings end up in a poor performing fund.

Exit the credit roundabout

One in two Australians are struggling with credit card debt.

An Australian Senate inquiry is soon meeting to address some of thorny questions many Australians are asking about credit cards – like why some cards are still charging interest topping 20 per cent at a time when the Reserve Bank’s official cash rate is just 2.0 per cent.

The inquiry couldn’t have come at a better time. Research by ME shows one in two credit card holders  are stuck in a ‘credit card roundabout’, unable to pay off the outstanding balance each month.

Do you speak Superannuation?

Superannuation, retirement and eligibility to the pension are regularly in the news headlines at the moment, yet studies have shown that much of the ‘jargon’ used when talking about these topics confuses most of us.

Nearly 8 out of 10 Australians admitted that they don’t really understand much of the terminology used.*

As superannuation is probably the largest asset many of us will accumulate during our working life (after the family home) and will play a major role in the standard of living people achieve in retirement, it is important that we know more about what the key terms mean.

In reality, most of the terms are quite straightforward.

To find out what 20 of the most commonly used superannuation terms mean, visit the Australian Unions Financial Advice Toolkit.
