How to get financially fit

Just like physical fitness relies on eating well and exercise, your financial fitness depends on making positive steps in the right direction. The experts at industry super fund−owned bank, ME have put forward several tips to get you started on your financial fitness journey.

Tip 1: Weigh up your situation

To begin with, track your income and what you spend your money on. Your bank statements are often a good place to start. You can then categorise your expenses into mandatory and discretionary spending − this will allow you to make informed decisions on your budget and identify your savings potential.

Tip 2: Set goals

Next, work out what your priorities are. Write down your goals, being specific and realistic about what you want to achieve. Know exactly how much you want to save and by when.

It doesn’t have to be this way according to Industry Fund Services, which operates a service to consolidate superannuation accounts and save members on unnecessary fees and charges, using its Eligible Rollover Fund AUSfund.

According to IFS CEO Cath Bowtell, “Most people know they should do something about their inactive super accounts, but are often not sure where to start.”

Alcoa workers vote for new deal

After six picket lines over 53 days on five sites involving 1500 people, workers at Alcoa have voted to approve a new agreement which locks in job security by preventing the creep of contracting, labour-hire and casualisation in the workplace.

This has been a difficult dispute but the workers at Alcoa have shown what is possible when workers stand together and demand fair treatment.

Workers faced the possibility of having their wages cut back to the award after the employer moved to terminate their agreement at the Fair Work Commission.

ACTU Secretary, Sally McManus said “Congratulations to all the workers who stood up and demanded secure jobs, this is a great example of the power of working people."
