Member Benefits Update April 2015

Member Benefits Update April 2015

Welcome to the April bumper edition of your Member Benefits Update. This month we report back on the fantastic turnout around the country for last month's National Day of Action, we find out how offset accounts can save you a bundle off your home loan, there's a $50 gift card offer from ISinsured, a $150 cash back offer from, 3 x DVDs and 5 x double movie passes from Madman to win plus heaps more!

Offset Accounts - money saver for home owners

An offset home loan makes spare cash work harder.

Research by ME Bank reveals that almost one in two (47%) Australian households are managing to tuck savings away each month. That’s great news. But in today’s low rate environment an offset account could be the ideal solution for home owners to make their spare cash work harder.

Offset accounts are a savings or transaction account linked to your home loan. Instead of being paid separate interest, the value of the linked account is deducted from your home loan when loan interest is calculated.

For instance, if you have $30,000 in the linked account and your home loan is worth $400,000, loan interest will be based on a balance of $370,000. This reduces the interest charged, making an offset account a very easy but highly effective way to get ahead with your home loan and save on long term interest costs.

Over 60? Tax-free options could apply

If you are aged 60 or over and still working, it may be possible to decrease the amount of tax you are paying by converting your superannuation account to a tax-free pension account.

This strategy, commonly referred to as Transitioning to Retirement (TTR), potentially offers you the option to either reduce your working hours and replace lost income by drawing funds from your pension account or continue working full time but boost your current superannuation balance in the years before retirement via salary sacrifice.

While you can start Transitioning to Retirement from age 55, it can become more tax effective from age 60, when drawings from a pension account become tax free.

Visit the Australian Unions Financial Advice Toolkit to find out more about how a Transition to Retirement strategy could benefit you.

March 4 National Day of Action

Tens of thousands of Australians took to streets around the country last month, united by anger at the policies of the Abbott Government and calling for a change of direction for the nation.

The national day of action was called by the union movement in protest at a range of policies that have undermined rights at work and living standards.

There was energy, passion and solidarity in every direction, showing once again what a powerful, united force Australian unions can be.

No doubt, this is the first of many events like this between now and the next election as unionists around Australia campaign for a new direction for our nation, one which preserves our living standards and rights at work.

Watch our excellent video montage of how the day unfolded around the country.

Keep an eye out for further details by checking the website regularly.

Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling -- where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou blurs the line between observer and participant to become the star of his own story.

Last Friday the ACTU made its submission to the Fair Work Commission’s Annual Wage Review, calling for a $27 increase in the minimum wage to $667.90 per week or $17.58 per hour. An increase in the minimum wage is especially important right now when you consider that minimum wages are at a record low of 43.4% of average weekly full time earnings.

“A $27 per week pay rise for our lowest paid workers is essential if Australia is to avoid creating an underclass of working poor,” said ACTU Secretary Dave Oliver.

In addition to a $27 per week increase to the minimum wage, the ACTU is also asking for compulsory superannuation to be increased by 0.5 per cent to 10 per cent for minimum award wage workers. This is to compensate Australia’s lowest paid workers for the cut to their retirement savings caused by the Abbott Government’s decision to freeze the 0.5 per cent increase to compulsory super that was due to come into effect on July 1 under the Superannuation Guarantee.

“Last year Joe Hockey raided the super accounts of Australian workers and that’s why unions are fighting to get 10 per cent compulsory super reinstated,” Mr Oliver added.
