Five signs you have ‘bank-xiety’

If you’re worried about your current bank, you’re not alone. 94% of Australians are worried that the big banks aren’t acting in their best interests.

Half of all Australians feel more negatively about banks after the Royal Commission and 85% think the treatment of customers by some banks was poor, according to a survey of 1,000 Australian adults that ME conducted in February 2019 – just after the Financial Services Royal Commission delivered its final report.

ME has coined the term ‘bank-xiety’ to describe these findings. Australians have always had a level of ambivalence towards banks, but the level of distrust uncovered by the survey is extreme.

But according to ME’s survey, only 14% of Australians are proactively doing something about the bank-xiety – admitting they have or are in the process or switching to a bank they trust – while 37% had not considered acting on their distrust, and 48% said they’d thought about or started doing research but hadn’t pursued it further.

Read on for the five signs you may have bank-xiety

Industry Fund Services Royal Commission update

In the wake of the Hayne Royal Commission into Financial Services, there’s been wide focus on the professional conduct and standards of financial planners and the organisations they represent.

Greed was present in all the scandals played out before Kenneth Hayne and his royal commission. Charging the dead, billing customers for no service and taking advantage of the most vulnerable and the unemployed. These were all common factors within the banking sector. Superannuation funds had a much better outcome. But their financial planners are, however, being questioned.
In January this year, a new regime came into play to raise the education, training and ethical standards of planners and ensure clients’ interests are protected. The standards are governed by the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA).

Morrison budget fails test on wages, fairness

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s pre-election sales pitch has failed to deliver fair pay rises or a fair go for working people.
The six-year trickle-down fantasy continued with Josh Frydenberg promising 3.5 percent pay rises by 2021-22, without detailing any plan to deliver them.

If working people had actually received the pay rises the coalition has been promising since 2013 we’d be on average $4000 richer, the Centre for Future Work found this week.
Morrison and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg have maintained their plan to undermine progressive taxation, with their tax plan putting people on $200,000 a year in the same tax bracket as those earning $45,000 from 2024.

ACTU President, Michele O’Neil said “This budget fails the fairness test. It’s a cynical attempt to buy votes, but Morrison and Frydenberg are giving with one hand and taking away with the other.”
