Show your support for baby Asha and the staff at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital

A3_selfie_letthemstay.jpg

The brave nurses and doctors of Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane are refusing to discharge Asha, an Australian-born one-year-old baby, who is set to be deported to Nauru detention centre.

The staff at Lady Cilento know conditions on Nauru will harm baby Asha physically and mentally. They’ve taken a pledge to do no harm and they’re refusing to break it.

They’re doing the right thing.

Send your message of support here. You can also upload a photo of yourself, your workplace or your family holding a #LetThemStay sign (download the sign here).

Stand with baby Asha and the brave staff fighting for her in Brisbane.

I support the staff at Lady Cilento Hospital. I don’t think any child or adult refugee should be NOT be held in prison- like conditions in Australia or offshore. Our Government’s (both past and present) offshore processing policy of refugees is inhumane, uncharitable and very ‘un-Australian’ (seeing politicians love to throw that silly term around – a term personally I hate). It is not a crime to be a refugee – after all we are part of the reason the vast number of these people are refugees. You don’t go and bomb the shit out of a country and then disallow it’s citizens the right to safe sanctuary. It is outrageous. I honour and applaud the strong and compassionate stand being taken. Free all our refugees.

Just proves the fascist minds and policy in this country. Let’s be human for once and allow this little girl and her family to stay here for whatever time they prefer.

As a member of Amnesty International for around 35 years, I cannot condone successive Australian governments’ calculated cruelty towards desperate people fleeing persecution. The child abuse inherent in long-term detention on Nauru & Manus Island, especially given reports of violence including sexual violence, is especially abhorrent. I also strongly condemn the government’s abrogation of democratic processes by concealing information about asylum-seekers (who are not ‘illegals’ under international treaties to which this nation is party) and threatening to prosecute officials, including health-workers bound by the hippocratic oath, from speaking out about abuses and protecting refugees like baby Asha. All praise to the doctors and nurses of Lady Cilento Hospital for bravely refusing to be bullied and standing up for human rights and common decency.

Thank goodness there are people like you showing the government that you are not prepared to give up your moral and ethical ideals by returning Asha to detention. Dutton and the federal government should be ashamed.

The government’s way of treating very vulnerable children and families needs to stop NOW.

Thank you to Queensland’s clinicians and all health workers who are taking such a brave stand. THANK YOU.
