Show your support for baby Asha and the staff at Lady Cilento Children's Hospital

The brave nurses and doctors of Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane are refusing to discharge Asha, an Australian-born one-year-old baby, who is set to be deported to Nauru detention centre.

The staff at Lady Cilento know conditions on Nauru will harm baby Asha physically and mentally. They’ve taken a pledge to do no harm and they’re refusing to break it.

They’re doing the right thing.

If this is Australia’s idea of “human rights”, what’s the difference between us and ISIS?

Seeking asylum is not illegal. Australia’s mandatory detention centres, both onshore and offshore, are not in the spirit of the agreements made as part of being a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention. I offer my thanks and support to the staff at Lady Cilento Hospital for standing up for baby Asha, her mother, and asylum seekers in general by refusing to discharge her to an uncertain fate in a Nauru Detention Centre.

As a Paediatrician I am a mandatory reporter for child abuse in Australia. I however would be liable for imprisonment for doing the same if I was working at Manus or Nauru. I am glad the doctors in Brisbane are taking a moral stand. How can we in good conscience send a child back to a place where we know it will suffer more harm. I strongly support your fight and hope that the politicians wake up…

A heartfelt thankyou for your courage. After years of moral ennui of mainstream attitudes towards refugees, you’ve galvanised action to stand up for human rights. Enormous respect.

Well done on standing firm. No child, no adult, should be in those ‘detention camps’. You are there physically, doing what many of us cannot. We are with you in spirit and you have our whole hearted support. Thank you.

We really believe in what you are doing to protect baby Asha. Thankyou for taking this stand. It is too Australias shame that we are detaining children in such harmful conditions. Cheers Eva and Elvi

It is wonderful that you are standing up to our despicable government and protecting these innocent children from being returned to an environment which is almost certainly going to cause them harm.
