Protecting a member’s most valuable asset

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 1 in 6 men and 1 in 4 women suffer from a disability during their working life that results in them taking more than six months off work.

One in five families will be impacted by a serious accident or illness that renders a parent unable to work. For a typical family, without insurance, this could result in the loss of more than half their household income.

What is Group Income Protection Insurance?

Group Income Protection insurance is a type of insurance policy usually taken out by a company on behalf of its employees as part of an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) or voluntarily by a group of employees.

‘Change The Rules’ national door-knock

Our wonderful ‘Change the Rules’ volunteers, together with ACTU President Michele O’Neil and ACTU Secretary Sally McManus, mobilised around the country on Saturday 1 September and hit the streets for a massive national door knock. Our message? Australia needs a pay rise.

Hundreds of selfies were taken on the day. Check them out on Facebook and Twitter to get an idea of the fantastic reception volunteers got and the issues people feel strongly about. Feel free to share and retweet on social media and elsewhere using the hashtags #ChangeTheRules and #AustraliaNeedsAPayrise.

Bushfire season is approaching; be prepared

Australia is facing the possibility of having a much longer fire season of about six or seven months, with bushfire season officially starting in October 2018 and running through to April 2019.

Now is the time to prepare for the bushfire season. Vero insurance has tips on how to prepare:

Before a bushfire

  • Ensure you have a Bushfire Survival Plan. Prepare this as soon as you can and discuss it with your family.
  • If you haven’t already, prepare an emergency kit and keep it handy e.g. first aid supplies, torch, battery operated radio, important documents and medicines.
  • Regularly clear gutters and rubbish around the property
  • More tips

Visit your Australian Unions Member Benefits website to find out more or give Vero a call on 1800 250 962 for a quote on home and contents insurance.

Vale Laurie Carmichael

The Australian union movement is saddened by the passing last month of former ACTU Assistant Secretary Laurie Carmichael.

Laurie dedicated his life to improving the living standards of working people and he shall be remembered as a giant of the Australian union movement.

After serving in World War II, in the fight to keep Australia free from fascism and Nazism, Laurie joined the Amalgamated Engineers Union (a forerunner to today’s Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, AMWU) while working on the Williamstown naval dockyards.
