The money mistake you can’t afford to make

One in four Australians are making a big mistake with their money and it’s draining their finances.

Research shows 25% of Aussies are not paying off debt even though they’re sitting on cash savings. And it turns out it’s not something that’s unique to Australians. Researchers in the UK have even coined the term “co-holding” to describe the habit of being in debt while having savings.

There can be perfectly logical reasons to hold both debt and savings. After all, having a pool of spare cash makes us more confident about managing an emergency.  The problem is, co-holding could be costing you dearly. Let’s do the sums to see why.

Gender Super Gap

The gender Superannuation gap

You’ve probably heard of the gender pay gap. But did you know that the gap worsens in retirement and is called the gender superannuation gap? Other contributing factors include; women being more likely to have a career break to raise children or care for parents, and tax concessions being disproportionately skewed to higher income earners (the majority of whom are men).

Did you know?

  • The current gender pay gap in Australia is around 18%.
  • Women retire with an average of 47% less super. Try the Women vs Men super comparison tool to see how you could be affected.
  • The gender superannuation gap affects nearly half of all retired women in Australia.
  • In 2012, approximately 40% of single women in retirement were living in poverty.

The onus shouldn’t be on women to fix the problem. The government must act by:

  1. Removing the rule that those earning less than $450 a month (who are mostly women) don’t get super.
  2. Pay super on parental leave
  3. Increase employer super contributions to 12%.

Workers want fair pay and secure jobs

The largest survey of workers ever undertaken by the Australian union movement, released on 2nd March, shows that working Australians are overwhelmingly concerned about the difficulty of winning fair pay increases and the threats to good, secure jobs.

The survey of 57,959 people conducted from September 2017 to February 2018 found:

  • 81.4% say it’s hard to get a decent pay rise in their workplace
  • 91% are worried about the loss of permanent jobs for the next generation of workers in Australia
  • 95.6 % agreed unions should be able to bargain with the decision makers, whether it’s at enterprise, franchise, sector or industry level
  • 83.5% say its “extremely important” to change the rules so employers cannot get away with underpaying workers

Running out of options, Polly takes an ill-advised trip to the coalface of celebrity dreams: Los Angeles, California. There Polly begins to realise that maybe there’s no such thing as ‘making it’ after all.
