Sally McManus elected Secretary of ACTU

The Australian Council of Trade Unions’ (ACTU) Executive has elected Sally McManus as the new Secretary.

Sally is the 10th elected ACTU Secretary in the organisation’s 90-year history and the first woman to hold the prestigious position. She fills the role vacated by former Secretary Dave Oliver, who left the ACTU in January. Sally was previously an ACTU vice president.

“I would like to thank the ACTU Affiliates for electing me as Secretary. It is a great privilege to serve the movement and continue a lifelong pursuit of protecting the rights of working people” Sally said.

Parmalat workers in Echuca WIN!

The ACTU welcomes the recent resolution of the Parmalat dispute in Echuca, with Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU) and Electrical Trade Union (ETU) members voting to accept an agreement that includes wage rises, improved redundancy provisions, and mandated consultation if contractors are brought in.

ACTU Secretary, Sally McManus, who was with the workers on the day of the announcement said, “This new agreement is a huge win for the Parmalat workers in Echuca who have been locked out of their workplace for more than two months.”

“Following on from the win by CUB workers last year, there is a clear warning to big business that they should stop trying to undermine or attack workers and instead work with unions to ensure fair and mutually beneficial outcomes.”

How your bosses can use your wage like a credit card

A disturbing number of small businesses use their employees’ superannuation entitlements like credit cards, an expert has warned.

Cath Bowtell, CEO of Industry Fund Services, said her company has strong evidence to suggest that a big contributor to Australia’s black hole of unpaid super is small businesses turning their workers into “unwilling creditors”.

“They often use it for cash flow. These businesses are effectively borrowing that money without the employee knowing – they’re an unwilling and unknowledgeable creditor,” Ms Bowtell told The New Daily.

IFS collects unpaid super on behalf of nine industry funds. In 2015-16, it contacted about 192,000 employers it believed to be behind on their super payments, which resulted in 37,400 of them coughing up $182 million owing to 297,000 workers. This is “only the tip of the iceberg”, Ms Bowtell said.

Walk all over breast cancer at the 2017 Mother’s Day Classic

Registrations are open for the 2017 Mother’s Day Classic fun run/walk on Sunday 14 May.

From modest beginnings in 1998, the Mother’s Day Classic has grown into one of Australia’s largest national charity events and has become an integral part of Mother’s Day for thousands of Australians. In 2016, more than 107,000 Australians who took part in the event raised $3 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This takes the total raised since 1998 to $30.4 million.

ME has proudly supported the Mother’s Day Classic since 2005.

Workers Capital book
Super Legacy book

Win one of two Super books!

We are pleased to be able to give away two important new books on Superannuation this month. We have one copy of each book to for luck readers to win.

Workers’ Capital tells the story of the Australian superannuation revolution led by trade unions in the 1980s. After a series of hard-fought industrial campaigns, an enormous financial industry was created, involving hundreds of thousands of employers and covering millions of fund members. From having one of the worst retirement savings systems in the developed world, in three decades Australia had one of the best.

Keating’s and Kelty’s Super Legacy shows the birth pangs were painful, delivery uncertain, and survival constantly threatened. “Universal superannuation for all working Australians has taken this nation from the middle order to be the envy of the world in just 25 years. Driven by then Treasurer Paul Keating and ACTU Secretary Bill Kelty, compulsory super now stands as one of the great innovations since Federation. Yet most Australians know little about the origins of what has become a distinguishing national emblem. This book does much to tell that proud story.”  – Hon Peter Collins AM QC, Chair, Industry Super Australia. Our copy of the book is signed by author.

To win one of these great books email [email protected] with your name, address, union name and membership number before close of business Friday 28th April 2017.

Minimum wage must increase by $45 a week to avoid working poor

ACTU secretary Sally McManus announced last week the union movement’s call for a $45 a week increase to the minimum wage.  A real increase to the minimum wage will address rising cost of living, inflation and boost the economy.

The ACTU said the increase to the minimum wage by $45 a week would not only boost family budgets, it would flow on to a substantial pick-up across the whole economy.

“We are living through a time when corporations and the very rich have become far too powerful and this has happened so quickly that our laws and rights – and the things that keep things in balance – have not kept up.” Ms McManus said.
