It turns out plenty of young adults are taking a leaf from The Big Bang Theory’s Howard Walowitz by settling into the parental nest for the long haul. In fact, government figures show around one in three young adults aged 18-34 still live in the family home.

Dave Oliver resigns from the ACTU

After thirty years of working for the Australian union movement, and as ACTU Secretary for the past 5 years, Dave Oliver has recently resigned to spend more time with his family.

“I am extremely proud to have spent my working life improving and protecting living standards for workers and their families” Dave said.

“Now is the time for renewal at the ACTU, with a new generation of highly skilled, diverse and motivated leaders each of whom are capable of fulfilling a critical leadership role.

This has not been an easy decision for me. I have taken it because the time is right for both the ACTU and myself.”

Workers are missing out on Super

Around 2.4 million or almost one third of Australian workers eligible for super are missing out on some or all of their entitlements, and little is being done about it, a new report reveals.

Under the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) employers must contribute 9.5 per cent into the super account of every worker over the age of 18 earning $450 a month.

But, using official ATO and ABS data, Industry Super Australia and Cbus have conservatively calculated that rogue employers are dodging compulsory superannuation payments to the tune of $3.6 billion a year (2013-2014). This equates to $1,489 or almost four months of super for the average worker affected.

Industry Super Australia chief executive, David Whiteley, says: “It is disturbing that nearly one third of workers eligible for SG are being short-changed”.

Vale Dr Carolyn Allport

NTEU General Secretary, Grahame McCulloch, pays tribute to the union’s first elected President, Dr Carolyn Allport, who sadly passed away on 16 January 2017.

“Carolyn was known as a strong voice for university values (including academic freedom), a passionate advocate for the rights of women, a dedicated campaigner for recognition of, and restorative action for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and a life-long supporter of social justice and the labour movement.  She was an active and often boisterous contributor to ACTU debate and policy making, and maintained a critical but deeply collaborative relationship with senior Labor Party ministers and spokespeople up to and including the Prime Minister.”
