Preserve savings, save the planet

Changing a few household habits can benefit your finances and the environment.

If the cost of necessities and your cash savings are keeping you awake at night, you’re not alone.

The latest Household Financial Comfort Report (HFCR) from industry super fund-owned ME Bank, show these are among the biggest sources of stress for Australians.

Living sustainably can help. Check out our seven ‘R’s to save money – and the planet.

1. Reduce

Cutting living costs can also support the environment. As a guide, Australians collectively fork out over $5 billion dollars annually in water bills. An 8-minute shower uses around 120 litres of water, so try using a timer to cut showers back to five minutes or less. It can see your water bills reduce to a trickle while saving precious water resources.

Don’t let the Morrison government ruin our retirement

Stop the Morrison Government’s plan to ruin your retirement by gutting superannuation.

We need to improve our superannuation system so women stop retiring into poverty, so that gig economy workers and contractors get super, and so that no worker has their super stolen by a dodgy boss.

Why is this important?

For years now, members of the Morrison Government have been campaigning against industry super and using the cover of Coronavirus, they are planning to take a sledgehammer to workers’ retirement savings.

Read on and sign the petition now!

Australia plunges into first recession in 30 years but still no plan for jobs

More than six months into the pandemic and facing the first recession in 30 years, the Morrison Government has still not produced a national economic reconstruction plan and is cutting back support for working people.

GDP has fallen a record 7 per cent in the June quarter according to data released this morning by the ABS. This is the largest quarterly fall since records began in 1959 and means Australia is in recession for the first time in 30 years.

Without a comprehensive national economic reconstruction plan like the one the ACTU put forward in July we know that many of the millions of workers currently reliant on JobKeeper will fall out of work entirely as the Morrison Government continues to cut back support.

ACTU President, Michele O’Neil said, “These are the worst economic figures ever recorded, we are in an unprecedented economic and public health crisis, and yet the Morrison Government has no plan for a way out.”

ACTU launches its new ‘For the Workers’ campaign

The coronavirus pandemic is affecting everyone, and it is workers who are carrying our community through this crisis.

But it also workers that have borne much of the worst impacts of the crisis: wrecked jobs, reduced hours of work, severe income cuts, being forced to access superannuation and being put at risk of exposure to the virus.

Tens of thousands of working people have put their bodies and lives on the line to get the entire Australian community through the pandemic.

Workers are the hidden heroes.

Australian workers need our support as we rebuild our economy. When we support working people, we can rebuild the economy for everyone.

‘What Happens Next?’ book offer and competition

Long before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the global economy, a reset to serve the wellbeing of people and the planet was plainly needed.

As Australia rebuilds, after the immediate health crisis has passed, it must be with the explicit purpose of constructing an economically and ecologically sustainable world.

With contributions from some of Australia’s most respected academics and leading thinkers, What Happens Next? sets out a progressive, reforming agenda to tackle the twin crises of climate change and inequality. It provides a framework through which our collective effort can be devoted to improving the lives of all Australians, and the sustainability of the world in which we live.

Contributors include: ACTU President Michele O’Neil; Emma Dawson; Professor Janet McCalman AC; The Hon. Anthony Albanese MP and MUA’s Thomas Mayor.
