Tell the Senate to Save Paid Parental Leave

We are calling on cross-bench Senators to stand up for Australian families and vote against the Government’s savage and unexpected cuts to paid parental leave.

Despite what the Government says, Australian mums and dads aren't fraudsters, rorters or double dippers – they’re hardworking people who should receive paid leave to spend time with their newborn babies.

The Government shocked Australians with their Mothers’ Day announcement to deny access to Government funded paid parental leave to 46% of Australian women.  As a result, 80,000 families will lose out with $11,800 to be ripped out of the budgets of 34,000 of those households.

It’s a decision that could force many mums to return to work earlier because they and their families will not be able to afford to stay off work without any income.

Access to 26 weeks paid parental leave is backed by experts as optimal for the health and well-being of mothers, babies and families, and to support increased participation of mothers in the workforce to boost our economy.

Even though universal paid parental leave was always intended to complement paid and unpaid leave arrangements negotiated by workers and their unions, Government Ministers are now accusing working women who receive both workplace and government funded paid parental leave of fraud, claiming they are “rorting”.

It simply doesn't make social or economic sense to cut paid parental leave.  This was the position Prime Minister Abbott took to voters at the last election and held until his budget backflip.

It’s time to stop the attack on working parents – and you can help by signing our petition calling on key Senators to vote against the Government's paid parental leave plunder.

This is a cruel scheme threatening to take away the essential bonding time between the mother and the baby. With reduced incomes, lots of mothers would be forced to join the workforce earlier than expected. Please stop this bill dead in its tracks. A stupid move by federal government.

It is essential for a good start into motherhood to be able to have the opportunity to spend the first months at least with your new baby if not even more. This initial bonding time is a natural need for both mum and baby as well as dads and needs to be supported financially. It is heartbreaking to leave your newborn because of financial pressure and nature has not intended fir this to happen.
