New budget a dismal failure for workers, education, health and jobsThe wealthiest one percent of Australian households will be breaking out the cigars in celebration at Budget 2016 according to economic experts. The new budget fosters in a lethal trifecta if you fall within the 75 per cent of households earning less than $80,000 per year. It means under-funding for schools, cuts to hospital budgets and triples the budget deficit. The budget, which includes proposed cuts to income tax and a new work-for-the-dole scheme, will see the deficit figure blow out $3.4 billion to $37.1 billion next financial year, and remain in the red for four years. |

2016 Mother’s Day Classic – on this Sunday 8 May!Registrations are still open for the 2016 Mother’s Day Classic fun run/walk happening this Sunday 8 May 2016. If you are a Melbourne union member and would like to join the Australian Unions team, we are called ‘The Walkers United’ and we’ll be participating in both the walking/running events. Don’t forget to wear your union gear on the day! We will meet at the AIST marquee at around 8:30am and will be wearing our union gear such as the ‘We Are Union’ and ‘Build a Better Future’ T-shirts. Workers’ Memorial DayJohn Waltis was just one of the many thousands of workers who gathered around the world last Thursday to remember comrades hurt or killed at work. Workers’ Memorial Day, April 28, is specially poignant for John, a father-of-two, who has been to the funeral of more than 50 colleagues, many of them close friends. “It’s not just the death of your workmate, it’s seeing how hard it hits their families and those left behind,” says the 63-year-old who has worked as a truck driver for more than 30 years. This is just one of the real life stories behind the grim statistics — already this year there have been more than 40 workplace deaths. International Workers’ Memorial Day, held every year since 1996, is a time to remember the dead and fight for the living says the Australian Council of Trade Unions.
