Save lives: Keep vital testing free

To Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull:

We the undersigned call on you to reverse the cuts to Medicare that will result in increased charges for Pap smears, blood and urine tests, X-rays, ultrasounds and MRIs.

These tests save people’s lives. They are important in early detection and treatment. No one should miss a Pap smear or avoid blood tests because they cannot afford it.

In the end, these tests not only prevent serious illness, they reduce future costs on our health care system.

We urge you to act now and reverse these cuts.

I had a liver transplant 24 January this year. Once I came home from Sydney, which now due to my surgery is an overnight trip down and an overnight trip back, I had to have a blood test every week. Now three months later I still need blood tests every two weeks which will eventually change to monthly.

These blood tests are to check the level of the anti-rejection medication in my blood, without these I could easily die. If these test were no longer free I don’t know how we would pay for them.

I’ve always worked and paid taxes, up until medical advice told me I had to finish work in 2013 at age 49. I lost a lot of money by taking my super so early as a partial and permanent disability payment. We managed to pay of our house, buy a new vehicle (I had a work leaseback vehicle). We have to stay in a health fund because of my medical needs, my medication is expensive – even being on a DSP and because of the need to stay somewhere near the RPA hospital every month we spend a lot of our pension on accomodation.

This LNP government doesn’t care at all about people like us, instead looking at us as leaners, something that I am definitely not. All my adult life I have been a volunteer, working with Apex, Rotary, Hepatitis NSW, our local camera club and the Association of Camera Clubs of NSW. Until becoming ill I was our town Santa, turning on the Christmas lights every year as well as being Santa at the local Cleft Palate group, Multiple Birth Association and various other community groups.

Let’s get rid of this Goverment who thinks of no one but their rich mates, insults anyone who dares question them and seem to be intent on taking us back to serfdom.

Watch Australia’s health status drop if this passes parliament. Not everyone can afford even a co payment! Everyone has the right to quality health care

How can you even think of these cuts? You on your salary can cope with the costs. Me as a single mother who works 2 jobs to pay the bills and pay the taxes that pay your wage(!!) cannot afford these cuts!

This is ridiculous; this push towards private health care is irresponsible and will cost lives! Australia is being turned into an American like system with its greedy, uncaring treatment of its people! Full, free healthcare should be available to all!
