Australians for Artistic Freedom

The arts play a crucial role in our society. Art speaks truth to power and it shapes how we think about ourselves and the world.

Alliance_Logo_(High_Quality).jpgWe oppose the dramatic funding cuts to the arts announced in the recent federal budget, including shifting more than $100 million away from The Australia Council.

The reason the Australia Council exists is to ensure a peer-reviewed, independent system of funding to the arts. This independence is vital to protecting democratic freedom of expression. Individual Arts Ministers should not be the exclusive arbiter of artistic expression.

We call on the Federal Government and Minister for the Arts George Brandis to reverse all proposed cuts to the arts sector and to support a vibrant and independent arts sector in Australia.

See the full list of eminent artists who have signed a joint letter to George Brandis here.

Nourish our hearts and souls and intellects. The Arts is the source. Maintain its funding.

The arts enrich the social, artistic and emotional lives of all who participate at any level. A government which does not regard its artists as essential, and indeed made of pure gold, is one that thereby treats its population with less respect than it deserves. The arts are part of any country’s heritage; not to be overlooked or having funding bases bandied about by cost-cutting, one-dimensional white businessmen!

I feel quite strongly about this issue but since I have multiple physical disabilities I am unable to volunteer, nor am I in a position to offer monetary assistance. I wish you all the best in this campaign.
